Digitization: what it is and what it means

Digitization moves into digital format what used to be on paper or done by hand, but it does not replace human action. It is a precondition of automation, not a synonym for it: without structured digital data you cannot build reliable automations, but the mere presence of digital data does not produce any automated flow. The distinction is operational: a company can be fully digitized and still have every operational step handled by people.
