BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is a standard notation for business process modeling, formalized by the Object Management Group and adopted as ISO/IEC 19510. It has more than a hundred symbols and supports the representation of events, conditional gateways, subprocesses and interactions with IT systems. Its expressive power is justified when the process requires this complexity; for simple or medium-complexity processes, it introduces reading friction that reduces adoption of the map by the people who are supposed to use it.
